How Do I Go About Maintaining My Porsche Air Conditioner?

The air conditioner is a very important accessory in modern day cars. However most people use it only in summer meaning that it remains unused for up to six months. This is very dangerous as it may cause a failure of the air conditioning system. This is because it is prone to dust which may cause clogging. Therefore to get the most from this system, you need to know how to maintain it. Here are a few tips to help you keep your Porsche air conditioner in tip top shape.

Run The Air Conditioner Regularly

Run the air conditioner at least once every week. While doing so, make sure to adjust the fan settings to the highest speed and the coolest setting. It is recommended that you keep it running for roughly 10 minutes. Doing this maintains the gas pressure at an optimum level and the compressor in perfect shape. As a result, the probability of the occurrence of mechanical damage is greatly decreased.

You should also run it on the defrost mode for 10 minutes on a weekly basis. This helps to eliminate excess moisture from the system and prevent accumulation of mildew. In this way it enables you to enjoy fresh air from your Porsche air conditioner.

Keep The Windows Shut

Most drivers tend to open their car windows to make the cabin cooler. However opening the windows increases the load on the air conditioner. It is forced to work harder than it should to cool your cabin. This means that is uses up more coolant than is needed. It also consumes more fuel making it costly in the long run.

Refill Regularly

The air conditioner uses a coolant to cool down the air before letting it into your cabin. Just like any other liquids in your car, the coolant can be used up leading to a low level. When the level gets too low, the air conditioner does not function effectively. It is recommended that you refill your coolant every two years. However you should check your car’s manual for the recommended refill time. When refiling, make sure to check the amount of coolant that is left. This helps to determine whether you need to drain the remainder before you refill in case the level is low. It may also help you to diagnose a leakage in the air conditioner.

Clean The Air Filter

Sometimes the air filter may collect dust particles and get clogged. This affects the functioning of the air conditioner as well. It is therefore necessary to clean the air filter from time to time or have it replaced. You should be able to find the air filter behind the glove box. Simply shaking the dirt away may work or you may need to use water. However you should ensure that it is completely dry before putting it back.

 

Clear Away Debris

The air conditioning system may suck some particles in and become clogged. It is therefore useful to clean the exterior gills under the windshield. You may find leaves or other debris that you need to clear. While doing this, you should also check the condenser under the hood. Use a hose to clean the condenser.
