Understanding The Porsche Auto Transmission System

A Porsche automatic transmission system works like magic. There are plenty of moving parts that might be mind-boggling at first. Once you get the hang of it and are able to understand how it all works to make the car move, then everything will run smoothly. Here are the basics about how the car shifts using an automatic transmission.

Transmission Purpose

Before everything else, you have to know the main purpose of a transmission system whether it is manual or automatic. Obviously, the car engine produces rotational power. This power needs to be transferred to the wheels for the car to move. This is where the transmission system starts to play its part.

Basically, it is the control mechanism by which the engine is able to spin at an optimal rate and at the same time give the wheels enough power to either move or stop the car. So, you can think of the Porsche auto transmission system as the power switchboard of the car.

Main Components of an Auto Transmission System

To make everything work seamlessly, there are several key components of an auto transmission system. First is the transmission casing where all the other parts are housed. Next is the torque converter which sits in the bell case and it has two functions. The first is to transfer power coming from the engine towards the input shaft and the second is to multiply the engine torque output. Other parts of the transmission system are the planetary gears, brake band and clutches.

How They Work Together

You see, there are plenty of moving parts involved on a Porsche auto transmission system. All in all, it combines mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering in order to perform a smooth cruising in the road. As an overview, the power flows in an automatic transmission starting from the engine where power is sent to the torque converter pump. From the pump, the transmission fluid sends the power into the converter’s turbine. The transmission fluid is then transferred back to the pump via the stator this time.

As the stator multiply the power coming from the transmission fluid, a vortex power rotation happens inside the torque converter. The turbine spins and sends power to the planetary gears through the central shaft. Depending on which brake band and multiple disc clutch is engaged, the power will make the sun and planetary gear system to either move or stop.

To put it simply, the auto transmission system will power the gears and it makes the car stay stationary or drive depending on the planetary gear arrangement there is in the drive train. The whole process is quite interesting in the sense that everything works in perfect synergy. As long as there is nothing wrong with all the components and that everything moves as expected, then you will be able to drive the car smoothly.
