Why Do I See So Much Smoke When Accelerating My Porsche?

Owing to its elegance, your Porsche attracts attention to itself. However you do not want it attracting attention for the wrong reasons. Imagine the sight of a modern and luxurious car as the Porsche emitting smoke. There is no telling the extent of the embarrassment you will experience if you own such a Porsche. If your Porsche produces a lot of smoke when you accelerate, it is a cause for alarm. It could point towards something small requiring just a small correction or a very serious problem with your engine. It is important to note the color as it will guide you in diagnosing the nature of the problem.

Black Smoke

The misconception is that when your Porsche produces black smoke, you have a very serious problem. However, black smoke only indicates that you have a minor problem that requires a simple fix. It may be as simple as too much gas or not enough air and may be fixed by simply adjusting the carburetor. When your Porsche emits black smoke, it means that the gas has passed through the engine without being burnt completely. It may also be as a result of a dirty air filter, stuck choke, faulty fuel pump, a leaking fuel injector or excess fuel pressure.

Older cars with high mileage coverage may produce black smoke due to normal day to day wear and tear. As a result of this wear and tear, the cylinder walls, pistons and valves get worn-out with time. This lets oil leak and get burnt, producing black smoke. When this happens, the engine needs to be repaired, rebuilt or even replaced.

White Smoke

White smoke is usually a sign that your Porsche is burning water and antifreeze. The coolant may get into the engine through a leaking head gasket or a cracked cylinder head. If the engine runs out of coolant, it tends to overheat and become damaged. However, that should be the least of your concerns. If the leaking coolant becomes a pool, the engine will suffer irreparable damages. Therefore, it is important that you turn the engine off whenever you encounter this challenge and call in a professional for assistance. It may also be brought about by a malfunctioning modulator valve on the transmission. This faulty valve makes the car to burn transmission fluid, hence the white smoke.

Blue Smoke

When your Porsche emits blue smoke, it is a sign that you have a problem of burning oil. This may be due to bad valve stem seals, worn-out valve guides or damaged cylinders or rings. It is important to check the car to try and find out where the burning oil is coming from. A common cause is the turbocharger. The moving parts of the turbocharger are lubricated by oil from the car’s pump. If the oil gets into the air being pumped to the engine, it will get burnt producing the blue smoke. This is not as expensive to fix as a faulty turbocharger. This is because a faulty turbocharger needs to be either rebuilt or replaced, thus the high costs.
