Why Does My Porsche Starter Refuse To Crank?
A starter that refuses to crank can be extremely annoying. It gets even worse when you’re in a hurry and it completely refuses to crank. Strangely though, many people do not seem to notice that Porsche starters do not just refuse to crank out of the blues. They first exude tell-tale signs of failure. Read on to learn more about what causes the problem and how to go about fixing it.
Battery Issues
When you have battery issues, your Porsche will not start. The battery may be discharged because you forgot to turn off the lights, or because you have a defective part of your car that is draining the battery. When there is low charge on your battery, the power is not enough to turn over the engine. The starter will therefore turn very slowly and you may hear a clicking sound when you try to crank.
To check whether the battery is discharged, turn on the windshield wipers. If they move slowly, then your battery is discharged and you need to recharge it. A very simple way of doing this is by jump starting your car then letting the engine run for some time in order to recharge the battery. However if the battery is old it may be completely dead. In this case it will not recharge and your car will not restart. You will need to replace the battery as a result.
Starter issues
Take a look at the starter. If there have been recent repairs, you may have loose connections. Gently tapping may reestablish the connection and start the car. Motor problems in the starter as well or the gear. The fuses may be blown, in the fuse box and simply replacing a blown out fuse may help start your car.
Flooded Engine
If your car starts then stalls and fail to restart, you may have issues such as a flooded engine. The extra fuel soaks the spark plugs as well as lowering the compression of the piston rings. In this case you may remove and dry your spark plugs or have them replaced and the engine will start if you do not have other problems.
Bad Fuel Pump
A faulty fuel pump may make your car to fail to start. This is because fuel is required in order to start and run your engine. Therefore if you have a faulty fuel pump, the engine is not getting the right amount of fuel required to start the car. It is recommended that you have a certified mechanic check your car if you suspect that it has fuel related problems. This is because fuel is highly flammable.
Incorrect Timing
Incorrect timing leads to problems in starting up your car. This is more common in cars that have had their timing belt or chain replaced. However in cars with an old timing belt, it may skip a few teeth and thus interfering with the timing. In cars with a timing chain, the chain may skip teeth if the chain tensioner fails or if the engine doesn’t have enough oil. The result is that the engine loses compression in the cylinders and your car fails to start.
