Why Is My Porsche Odometer Inaccurate?

A sense of direction as you drive. The need to feel how fast you’re driving. The need to feel everything is intact and that you’re in control. All these need to be in place for one to feel safe. For Porsche owners these concerns hardly ever crop with. The vehicle is designed not just to impress but to perform. So you get to see how fast you’re driving, how much fuel your car consumes and of course, how much distance you’ve covered. If anything goes wrong, the car’s inbuilt artificial intelligence gets in action and lets you know what is wrong or rather what needs fixing. It so happens though, that sometimes, the odometer works up. It either fails, or gives you inaccurate reading. Read on to learn why this happens and what you can do about it.

The Root Cause

More often than not, the odometer fails then almost immediately after or even before, the speedometer also fails. If this is the case with your car, then there is a high likelihood that your speed sensor needs replacement. This shouldn’t be a problem mainly because installing both the speedometer and the odometer is something your local Porsche mechanic can do in an hour or two.

If the speedometer works just fine but the odometer doesn’t, then there is a high likelihood that the gears which turn the odometer have failed. Chances are, the gears are broken. The best you can do in this case is to have the broken gears replaced.

Once you have the cluster out, remove dust and dirt using compressed air.  Then clean the clear plastic with a microfiber cloth. This is also the perfect time to upgrade your Porsche’s cluster lighting by throwing in one or two LED lights. That way, your Porsche will give itself out way long before the odometer starts working up.

Getting The Job Done

You’ll be lucky to fix the odometer on your own if it failed because of a simple reason as already explained. In many cases though, the job usually calls for an expert. Either way, note that the repair or replacement job is delicate. You’ll have to be extremely careful as the odometers and speedometers are extremely sensitive components. Be keen as you remove all connected parts. To make your work easy, spread a white colored cloth on your working space while working on the odometer or speedometer gauge. This serves two main purposes. It will be easy for you to spot tiny parts of the odometer or speedometer gauge. It will also make sure no part of the gauge rolls away.

Point To Note

The odometer will only be inaccurate because of a faulty speed sensor. So before you examine any other component have both the engine speed sensor and the vehicle speed sensor diagnosed. Have this done by an expert especially if you drive a modern Porsche model. Then always remember that you cannot and should not tamper with the mileage your odometer has captured. Keep in mind too that the odometer can also go a long way to help you determine your Porsche’s value should you put it up for sale. If yours goes off, then your Porsche could be racking up more miles than you actually drive. This alone explains why your car must always have a functional odometer.
