Why Is My Porsche Steering Wheel So Stiff?

Imagine driving with a flawless steering wheel. All goes well as you drive. You even enjoy the driving experience. After all, you are driving a Porsche – a car designed with perfection in mind all in the name of giving you a one of a kind driving experience. But then something strange happens. The steering wheel becomes stiff. Sounds strange but it happens. You do not have to worry about it though solely because it a problem you can prevent. Read on to learn why it happens and what you can and should, do about it.

Tire Pressure And Alignment

Believe it or not, improper air pressure in your tires actually makes the steering wheel stiff. This is especially true in the case of deflated tires. It is therefore very important that you always ensure that all the tires of your Porsche are inflated in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendation. It is also useful to check the front-end alignment. Misalignment may be brought about by uneven tire treads. When you have misalignment in your car, it will pull to one side when taking a turn or simply just driving. Thus the steering wheel becomes hard and stiff. Uneven tire pressure could also make your steering wheel stiff.

Fluid-related Issues

Sometimes though in rare occasions, the pressurized hose becomes loose or starts leaking. This then means that you will have a low level of fluid in the steering system. When this happens you will have reduced pressure, reduced functionality of the pump and your steering wheel will become stiff as a result.

The power steering fluid is no exception when it comes to collecting impurities with time. As it collects this particles over time, it may end up being too thick to be able to flow freely. This in turn acts on the system as its parts are not well lubricated. However, most of the times this is caused by failure to change the fluid within the specified period. If this is the case, you need to drain the old oil and replace it with fresh oil in order to solve the problem of stiff steering wheels.

Faulty Pump

It is not only the fluid level that is important in generating the correct amount of pressure in the power steering system. The pump plays an important role as well. Therefore, if the pump malfunctions, controlling the steering wheel becomes difficult. As much as a faulty pump does not stall the wheel completely, you will need to apply a lot more effort in order to turn. This is very dangerous especially when making sharp turns. Therefore you should have your Porsche examined by a professional mechanic as soon as possible when you notice that the steering wheel is stiff.

Bad Steering Rack

If you realize that the steering wheel is stiff only after just starting your car and it moves more freely after a while, you may have a bad steering rack. The steering rack may be damaged by normal day to day wear and tear. The reason behind the steering wheel moving more freely after a while is because the rack gets hotter as the engine runs allowing for lubrication. You may opt to drive on but it only worsens the condition and you may have to pay for it dearly in the long term.

Damaged Serpentine Belt

A damaged serpentine belt is also one of the most common culprits behind a stiff steering wheel. The belt gets worn out with time and becomes loose. As a result, the steering wheel begins to depict signs of stiffness and you should have the belt replaced as soon as possible. Failure to do so in time, leads to a driving hazard as your steering wheel may lose its functionality completely when the belt breaks.
