Why Is My Porsche Steering Wheel Suddenly So Hard To Turn?
There’s no doubt at all that the steering system is one of the most important control systems of any vehicle. Without it, the driver will have no sense of direction. As such, it goes without saying that the steering wheel should at all times be flawless. It must work as it was designed. Anything other than that can mean disaster as you try change lanes or as you turn in an effort to avoid collision with an oncoming truck. So what exactly causes the Porsche steering wheel to suddenly become stiff and refuse to turn? Read on to learn more.
Tire Pressure
This sounds somewhat strange or even bizarre but bad air pressure can be the reason behind a stiff steering wheel. The solution is simple. Inflate your Porsche tires according to the manual it came along with. Stick to the right PSI all the time.
Front end alignment is yet another common problem that comes along with tire pressure issues. Uneven wear and tear on the front tires will force your Porsche to pull to the side while taking a turn or while driving straight. It does not end there. Uneven tire tread also leads to poor wheel alignment, which is a problem that can also trigger a hard and stiff steering wheel especially when making turns.
Faulty Steering Rack
Your Porsche wheel is connected to the steering rack through a series of U joints and shafts. With time, the U joints and shafts wear out and get damaged. The solution is to of course, replace the worn U joints as well as the shafts with new ones. You’ll know the steering rack is the culprit behind the sudden stiff steering the moment the steering wheel becomes stiff as soon as you start the car. The wheels will then gradually feel easy and free to move as you continue driving. This happens because the steering rack gets hotter as the engine runs. It then allows lubricants to settle in. You can only drive with this condition for a while before it worsens and escalates into a serious safety issue. To avert such a scenario, fix the problem as soon as you can.
Faulty Serpentine Belt
A broken or cracked serpentine belt can also make it hard for your Porsche’s steering wheel to turn. The belt gets worn with time because it is always on the move as long as the car is in motion. The steering wheel then starts showing signs of stiffness as soon as the belt becomes lose as a result of wear and tear. Replace the belt before it breaks and makes it hard for you to control the car.
Fluid Leakage
Low fluid levels in the steering wheel system can also cause stiffness. This occurs when the pressurized hose area suddenly gets lose or develops a leak. This compromises the hydraulic system by reducing pressure in the system. The pump also dries out and before you know it, the steering wheel fails to get enough fluid supply. The solution here is simple. Have a mechanic fix any fluid leakage and replenish the fluid with fresh fluid.
